I have so many fond memories of times spent with Steve McBride. I worked at WVU from 1997-2002, and while at WVU, I had the good pleasure of developing and teaching a new class, with Steve, called Meanings of Place. In the class, I learned so much from him about how a landscape architect views the world around us, and I feel humbled and grateful for how patient Steve was with my passionate but largely "untrained" eyes and sentiment. During the 1980s I taught English in China, learning Chinese "along the way." I always told folks that my motivation for learning Chinese was so that I could "eat my way across China." I love food, cuisine and culture--and the ways these elements intersect and how a true gourmand understands these connections. Steve was just such a gourmand. I continue to be inspired by his life, legacy, and full-throttle-life-is-a-gift-so-go-for-the-gusto approach to every situation. He was a mentor and an encourager in my life, and for that I am ever grateful. Blessings to his family and friends; may the Lord Jesus comfort you through and through during this time of loss.

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Steven Burch McBride and especially to his children son Sean (Eren) and daughter Megan. Having known the McBrides for many years, we witnessed how much his students and the Morgantown and WVU community cared for them. Serving alongside Steve ,Mary Templeton was a WVU faculty colleague in the College of Agriculture , Forestry and Consumer Sciences later becoming the Davis College who enjoyed working and knowing he and Carol and family .Even after Steve's retirement from WVU, he remained active and furthered his education as well as actively participated and participated many Morgantown area civic projects and organizations especially in South Park neighborhood.. Although I was not a student of Landscape nor of Agr and Forestry , I came to know how respected and liked , Steve was by my other WVU students. His impact was widespread and shaped many lives, through teaching, education, love of travel and his positive attitude in spite of adversities. He will be missed and long remembered by all and his full life made a difference to so many. Prayers and thoughts to his family. May the shared memories of Steve and Carol bring comfort as their lives are celebrated. Blessings.

My condolences to Steve's family. He was my adviser in landscape architecture at WVU and we ended up being life long correspondents about the program. He was a good man and a tremendous influence on me and my career, all in his soft spoken yet always appropriate way.

I worked as secretary for the Landscape Architecture Department. Steve was a wonderful employer, was always pleasant and cheery and very appreciative of everything that you did for him. After I left, I would occasionally see him on the Rails-To-Trails running. He was a wonderful person as well as a very good landscape architect. He will be missed by all.

As an educator, Steve's legacy is immeasurable. I deeply appreciate Steve (known to us students at the time as "Mr. McBride") being part of the great education in landscape architecture I received at WVU. I particularly remember struggling to stay awake in environmental law class, despite Steve's best effort to make a rather dry subject somewhat engaging. More importantly, one of the things Steve taught me and my fellow students was earthwork grading. After 18 years in the profession of landscape architecture, I have yet to meet anyone with grading skills that exceed mine, and presumably that of my fellow graduates he taught.
Although Steve has left us sooner than anyone should, I hope everyone can find solace in the fact that he had such a positive impact on so many people and the profession of landscape architecture. And, we should all smile about a man who had a life well lived.
Cheers,
Jason Himick, PLA

I am so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. Please accept my deepest sympathies and my high regards for your father.
Steve was my mentor and advisor while I was getting my degree in Landscape Architecture at WVU. Being from the same home state of Vermont and him being the exact same age as my parents, we developed a genuine bond. Steve also placed me in my first job and well the rest is history as they say.
He made a genuine difference in my life and I will always remember him fondly.
He was a true champion of the profession and the Landscape Architecture department at WVU and will be greatly missed.
