Sgt. Michael Todd May, a 10 year veteran of the Monongalia County Sheriffâs Department was killed in the line of duty in the early hours of Saturday, February 18, 2012.Sgt. May was born in Morgantown on April 2, 1970, the son of Franklin Gerald May and Catherine Faye (Baker) May.In addition to his parents, survivors include one brother, Frankie May and his wife Renee as well as a niece and nephew, Canon and Bryiar May his aunts and uncles including Fred Baker and his wife Cindy, Jack May, Walter May and wife Judy, and Bill Shuman and his wife Ramona, and several cousins.He was a 1988 graduate of Morgantown High School and attended Fairmont State University where he pursued a degree in Criminal Justice. After college, Sgt. May graduated from the West Virginia State Police Academy. He was employed for a short time with the Berkley County Sheriffâs Department and then began his career with the Monongalia County Sheriffâs Department where he was a lead on the SWAT team. He also worked at the Eastern Regional Corrections Facility and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Additionally, he served as President of the Monongalia County Deputy Sheriffâs Association.In his spare time, he loved riding his Harley anytime that he could, and was an outdoorsman who spent countless hours in the woods and streams where he would hunt and fish. He was near the completion of a log cabin in the mountains of West Virginia that he and his brother and father built by hand.He loved spending time with his niece and nephew. He was an amazing son, brother and true friend to all who knew him.In his 41 years on this earth, his life was dedicated to service. He began by protecting his younger brother and family, and continued on by protecting the innocent. He unselfishly gave his life to protect others from those who do not value life. Now, he has been called once again to serve by the Lord.Family and friends will be received at Chestnut Ridge Community Church, 2223 Cheat Rd., Morgantown, WV on Thursday, February 23 from 11 AM - 9 PM and Friday, February 24 from 9-11 AM. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday morning at the church with Pastor Tim Haring officiating. Interment will follow, with full honors accorded, in Greene County Memorial Park, near Waynesburg, PA.
